Mark Chapter 9 is full of contrasts. It takes us to the mountaintop of glory and down into the valley of doubt. It reminds us that following Yeshua requires faith when things are unclear, courage when things are hard, and humility when things are good.
The Transfiguration (Mark 9:1–13)
Yeshua takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, His appearance is transformed. His clothes shine brilliantly. Moses and Elijah appear. A cloud overshadows them, and a voice says, “This is My Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!”
Takeaway: Yeshua is greater than Moses and Elijah. His words matter most. When things are confusing, start by listening to Him.
A Father’s Honest Prayer (Mark 9:14–29)
A crowd surrounds the disciples. A desperate father pleads for his son, who is tormented by an unclean spirit. The disciples can’t cast it out. Yeshua says, “All things are possible for one who believes.” The father replies, “I do believe. Help my unbelief.”
Takeaway: Faith isn’t pretending. It’s bringing our real doubts to God and trusting Him anyway. That honest prayer is one of the most beautiful in all of scripture.
Teaching About His Death (Mark 9:30–32)
Yeshua teaches again that He will be betrayed, killed, and rise again. But the disciples still don’t understand, and they’re afraid to ask.
Takeaway: Don’t be afraid to bring your questions to Yeshua. He welcomes sincere hearts that want to learn.
Who’s the Greatest? (Mark 9:33–37)
The disciples argue about who among them is greatest. Yeshua sits down and says, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.” Then He brings a child into their midst and says, “Whoever welcomes one of these little ones in My name, welcomes Me.”
Takeaway: In God’s kingdom, greatness looks like humility, service, and care for the overlooked.
What’s Not Against Us Is For Us (Mark 9:38–41)
The disciples try to stop someone casting out demons in Yeshua’s name. Yeshua says, “Don’t stop him. No one who does a miracle in My name can soon speak evil of Me.”
Takeaway: Be careful not to limit what God can do through others. He’s working in more people and places than we realize.
Serious Warnings (Mark 9:42–50)
Yeshua speaks strong words about avoiding sin and causing others to stumble. He says it’s better to lose a hand, foot, or eye than to be thrown into hell with everything intact. Then He talks about being “salted with fire” and urges His followers to live at peace with one another.
Takeaway: Sin is serious, and so is the call to holiness. But the goal is peace, purity, and preserving what is good.
